Practice!
Allen Iverson's famous quote and video rant, "Are we talking about practices?(if you want a good laugh check it out)" comes to mind this time of year. The summer is great, but it may build some bad habits as we spend time at the beach, hang out with friends, and travel. We get out of the regular habits that we have established over a school year. There are 20 days until the first day of school and this is a good time to start building those habits that will help your child succeed this school year. If it takes 20 days to create good habits, today is day 1. If your child has not been reading or actively using their brain power, start setting aside time, 30 minutes to 1 hour to read a book, try a Sudoku, get on JIJI, or have them write in a journal. Start a sleep schedule of going to bed at a certain time, and getting up at a certain time (this is the hard part). If as a family you develop these habits early and often, come August 20, your child will be more focus and school ready.
Think about this, Olympians spend four years practicing, for some of them just a chance at a few seconds of glory, take the time to begin these small habits!
